I ordered this mouse after my fincky Targus 2.4 GHz wireless mouse finally quit. I wanted something bullet proof with the small USB transceiver and I'm really impressed so far.
This mouse (HP Product No.: VK482AA, Mod.No.: FHA-3511) uses TWO AA batteries which gives it a great range of over 30 feet, meaning you'll never be moving the mouse to the other side of your laptop to get it to work (like my old one.) This is a laser mouse and it must be utraviolet because you don't see any light from the sensor on the bottom. There is a light in the scroll wheel which comes on to show it's working when you move the mouse or press a button (if you set the software setting to "High.") I'm sure HP did this because you can't see the glaring red sensor. The software lets you turn this feature off, which should extend your battery life. The software also has a battery monitor to tell you battery condition.
This mouse has five programable buttons: the main left (main) and right (context menu), the scroll wheel button (auto scroll) and two side buttons which are pre-programmed to be used for page-forward (right) and page-back (left). (Once you use this feature while using your internet browser you'll be spoiled.) My thumb sits right below the left side button making it easy to operate. They could have moved the right side one forward a bit to fit my ring-finger better, but then it wouldn't be compatible with you "lefties" out there. These buttons (plus the scroll wheel button) are programable thru the included software if you have a better purpose for them. If you like the defaults, my Windows 7 mouse drivers did a fine job without the HP software.
The buttons all click (one reviewer said the side ones didn't?) but the scroll wheel movement is completely smooth without the typical racheting. I thought this would be a drawback, but it was simply something I was used to. The scroll wheel has a nice feature which lets you tilt it side-to-side for horizontal scrolling (like when you zoom in on something with CTRL+Scroll) removing the need to use the scroll bar at the bottom of the window. NICE.
The bottom of the mouse has two large plastic strips on the bottom for sliding on your table surface (not just the 3 or 4 dots) The mouse works on all kinds of surfaces, even my leg. (didn't like my fleece bath robe though!)
One review said the recessed on/off button was hard to use, but my fat fingers manage it just fine with the finger nail. (I only turn mine off if I'm traveling.) A small slide switch on the bottom releases the whole top of the mouse allowing you to get to the batteries and provides a place to stow the small USB transceiver if you need to. (I just leave it plugged in the side of my laptop; it sticks out about 3/8".)
There are so many choices when you buy a mouse, many of them cheaper, but I think you'll be satisfied with this one. I am.
